About The Founder
GWENDOLYN SMITH is the President and CEO of Empowered by Gratitude (EBG), Incorporated, a nonprofit 501 (c) (3) charity organization. EBG was birthed in 2014; however, the organization was originally inspired by the memories and charity of Gwendolyn’s mother, the late Lucille Salters, who was an advocate for the lost and the less fortunate. While her mother didn’t have a lot of resources, her home was an open door to those in need of refuge for a night, a hot meal, or a change of clothing. As a young child, Gwendolyn remembers her mother insisting that she and her siblings give up their beds to accommodate the guests for their overnight stay. “I didn’t fully understand the compassion of Mother then,” says Gwendolyn, “but it has certainly remained a part of my journey and a piece of my heart – bringing hope and happiness to the people.”
Born with a servant’s heart and motivated by her mother, Gwendolyn finds joy in blessing others through her talents, gifts, and resources. She has always had a burning desire for helping others, and she does so at every opportunity. Because of this deep commitment, Empowered by Gratitude, Inc., was birthed -- empowered by a grateful heart. While the vision tarried in her spirit for a while, it is now active and alive. The emerging motto became: “Helping People Help Themselves.”
Gwendolyn is honored to have her husband, Frank O. Smith, Jr., serve as the Vice-President of EBG. Frank is equally committed to helping those in need. He has a heart to mentor, nurture, and empower people to their fullest potential. He brings a wealth of administrative, structural, and analytical knowledge to the organization.
Our faith, grateful hearts, and genuine love for people and the community have motivated us to enable and empower those who may have been labeled “powerless.” We are devoted to foster mentorship, spiritual programs, and services.
“As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words but to live by them."
-John F. Kennedy
